TED Talk

http://www.ted.com/playlists/171/the_most_popular_talks_of_all

The video or TED talk rather, that I chose is called, “How schools kill creativity” by Ken Robinson. In this TED talk, he talks about creativity and how most kids’ creativity diminishes as they grow up to be adults. He brought up a good point saying, “Picasso once said that all children are born artists, and the problem is to remain artists as we grow up”. The problem is growing in to our creativity, rather than out of it. Kid’s today are scared to be wrong. In the video he says that “if you are not prepared to be wrong, you will never come up with anything original”

Blog 6

In this week’s Public speaking class, we talked and practiced debating. We were given a list of debates to choose from and we had to pick 6 topics that we would like to debate. We had to pick them and post it on our blog so we could go over them in class. We had a vote do decide which topics we would like to have a debate about. Most of us didn’t pick the same topics so it took us a while to finally pick a topic. We ended up picking 2 topics. “Should people be fined for recycling”, and “Should grades be abolished”. We were for grades should not be abolished, and against people being fined for not recycling. Our side’s argument basically went like this: I can honestly say that grades are the motivation in high school. If something is not being graded, it is never completed to the same standard as something that is. Upper level students often thrive on the competition between other students, and without this, there will never be work of such a high standard. Also, how will students be picked for universities, when universities can't tell an A+ student from a D- student? Grading is an essential part of testing ones abilities or knowledge. Testing knowledge and problem solving abilities is an important aspect of teaching. Grading is an important aspect of testing. One cannot test ones self without a result of that test, to succeed or fail is how we can come to grow. We learn from the results and consequences of our actions, What will college look at? If a kid was a bad student in high school, then will any college just pick them? I am for grading systems. Keep them. That was what we argued for the topic, “Grades should be abolished”. After the debate we went over who we thought won or had a more persuasive argument, and obviously the people that were on one team were biased towards their team so we couldn’t really get a clear view of who we thought had the better argument. The next topic we debated was, like I said, “should people be fined for not recycling”. The other team had a really good argument so it was hard for us to rebuttal. I thought that Alexis did a good job of rebutting and always shows a lot of passion when she does so. Simon also did a good job of presenting his argument and Omarion did a good job as well. I didn’t think that our intro was very good. It could have been better. I believe that I was the strongest speaker in the debate because I presented my argument very clearly and cohesively. I did a good job of addressing and counter arguing some of their points. All in all I think this was a good activity because I feel like everyone needs to know how to debate. Debating is something that you can apply to a lot of things in your life.

In this week's class in public speaking, we are talking about and arguing debates. She spit us up In 2 teams of three and gave us a topic and assigned which team was pro and which team was con, and so we had to debate about the given topic. We were given 30 seconds for our opening and the other team was given 30 seconds for their opening. We were then given 30 seconds for a rebuttal and likewise the other team. And then lastly we were given 30seconds for our closing statements. This activity In my opinion taught us how to speedily gather our arguments and come up with valid points to use in the debate. The topic we were given to research and debate was "should grades be abolished" and also "should people be fined for not recycling". I am going to present the pro and cons for both topics. To begin with, I'm going to talk about the first topic, "should grades be abolished". There are a couple of reasons why grades should be abolished. For once, the notion that the harder you work, the higher your grades will be is not necessarily true. Grades do not measure one's intelligent, it only measures ones academic ability. "  And to have a certain GPA as a prerequisite for admission is wrong.
Some students may be very deserving of admission, yet not have high enough grades. And grade inflation, which is not uncommon, makes it easy for students who are mediocre or worse to have what looks likes impressive grades.
And not only does grade inflation exist, but its exact opposite happens, too.  In courses where there are no cut and dried correct answers, grading is often highly arbitrary and subjective. Sometimes, a student can be very bright and hard working, yet teachers or professors can show extremely poor judgement in grading, and give low  grades for outstanding work." An article online on why grading should be abolish. Also stated in the article "a student may have absolutely no control over the grade he or she gets in a course, and work extremely hard, yet receive only a lousy C, or even a D, while other students in the class who put no more than a tiny fraction of the effort in,and have minimal academic ability will get As and Bs." The con of having grades abolished is that students would have to motivation or desire to do well and or thrive because they know they will not be graded. They would slack off in the class room and put In minimal effort.
The next topic is, should people be fined for not recycling. The pros of this is that this would improve the environment significantly. It would also benefit people that recycle because they get a little extra money from recycling. The con of this is that Recycling should be treated as a bonus, not as a requirement. It promotes sustainability of our Earth, but it is unjust to fine people for refusing to save the environment.
